Claude Code Pricing in India: Which Plan Should You Pay For?
Claude Code is included in Claude Pro ($20/month, or $17/month billed yearly), Max (from $100/month), Team and Enterprise plans. The free Claude plan does not include it. Rupee figures assume roughly ₹85–₹90 to the dollar and exclude GST. Your card statement shows the exact amount after conversion and bank charges.
Can you use Claude Code for free?
Not on an ongoing basis. Anthropic’s setup documentation says Claude Code needs a Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise or Console (API) account, and the free Claude plan does not include it. People searching “Claude Code free” usually find one of three things:
- API credits — new Console accounts sometimes receive small trial credits, which run out quickly with an agentic coding tool.
- Company or university seats — your employer or college may already pay for Team or Enterprise.
- Other tools — free tiers of Google Antigravity or GitHub Copilot give limited agent usage. See Antigravity vs Cursor.
For real project work, Pro is the realistic starting point.
Subscription or API key: which is cheaper?
Subscription (Pro / Max)
Fixed monthly price with usage limits that reset on a schedule. Predictable, and usually far cheaper for an individual who codes every day. When you hit a limit you wait for the reset or upgrade.
API key (Console)
You pay for every token Claude reads and writes. Large codebases and long agent sessions can cost more than a subscription in a single day — but it suits occasional use, scripts and CI pipelines where usage is bursty.
Rule of thumb: if you use Claude Code on most working days, a subscription is cheaper. If you run it a few times a month or inside automation, the API can be cheaper. Set a monthly spend limit in the Console either way.
Which plan should you choose?
- Learning or building your first app: Pro. It is enough for evenings and weekends.
- Full-time developer hitting Pro limits: Max at the 5x tier, then 20x only if you still hit limits.
- Agency or startup with 3+ developers: Team, so billing, admin and data controls are central.
- Running Claude in CI or scripts: an API key with a spend cap.
Start one level lower than you think you need. Upgrading takes a minute; unused Max capacity is money spent for nothing.
Paying for Claude from India
Claude subscriptions are billed in US dollars to a card. Use a credit or debit card enabled for international online transactions; many Indian debit cards have this switched off by default, so turn it on in your bank app if the payment fails. RBI e-mandate rules mean recurring payments sometimes need you to approve the renewal. Businesses should add GST details in billing where supported and keep invoices for accounting.

Long conversations carry old context. Clear or start a new session when you switch to unrelated work.
Pick the model for the job
Use a lighter model for simple edits and the strongest model for architecture or tricky bugs.
Review usage weekly
Check whether you are hitting limits before upgrading — often better prompts are the cheaper fix.
