Claude Code vs Cursor: Which AI Coding Tool Should You Use?
Cursor is an AI code editor: you work inside a VS Code-style editor and the AI helps as you go. Claude Code is an agent: you describe a task and it reads, edits and runs your project, from the terminal, IDE or desktop app. Both start at $20/month. Our Hyderabad team uses both.

How Claude Code and Cursor work (the real difference)
Both tools use large language models to write and change code, but they are built around different ways of working.
Cursor is a code editor. It looks and feels like VS Code — your extensions and shortcuts carry over — with AI built into every part: tab autocomplete that predicts your next edit, inline “edit this” commands, a chat panel that understands your codebase, and an agent mode that can make changes across files. You stay in the driver’s seat, reviewing each change as you go.
Claude Code is an agent made by Anthropic. You give it a task in plain English — “add Razorpay checkout to the cart page and write tests” — and it explores the project, plans, edits files, runs commands and tests, and reports back. It runs in the terminal and also inside VS Code and JetBrains, in a desktop app and on the web. You act more like a reviewer than a typist.
That difference matters more than any feature list: Cursor speeds up your coding; Claude Code takes on whole tasks for you.

| Runs commands and tests | Yes, in agent mode | Yes, with your permission |

When Cursor is the better choice
- You are a developer who writes code all day and wants faster typing, smart autocomplete and quick inline edits.
- You want to see and approve every change in a familiar editor.
- You like switching between AI models for different jobs.
- You are learning to code and want help without handing over control.
When Claude Code is the better choice
- You want to hand over whole tasks: build a feature, fix a bug across 15 files, upgrade a library, write tests.
- You work on large codebases where understanding the project structure matters.
- You are comfortable describing outcomes clearly and reviewing the result.
- You automate work with scripts, CI or scheduled jobs — it runs well outside an editor.
How our team in Hyderabad uses both
At Kode Studio we build client websites, online stores and web apps every week, and we use both tools — they don’t compete as much as people think:
- Planning and big changes: Claude Code. We describe the feature, let it explore and propose a plan, then let it implement across the codebase.
- Fine-tuning and design work: Cursor. Tweaking layouts, CSS and copy is faster with inline edits and autocomplete.
- Review: a developer reads every change before it ships. AI tools write code quickly; they also write confident mistakes — exposed API keys, missing security checks, broken mobile layouts.
Built something with an AI tool and stuck? We regularly finish, fix and deploy projects started in Cursor, Claude Code, Lovable and Bolt — see AI website deployment.
Verdict: Claude Code or Cursor?
Pick Cursor if you want an AI-powered editor that makes you faster while you stay hands-on.
Pick Claude Code if you want an agent that completes tasks end to end while you review.
Many professional developers use both — and at $20/month each, trying both for a month is cheaper than one wasted day. If you are a business owner rather than a developer, neither replaces an engineer reviewing what gets shipped to customers.
