What is schema markup?
Schema markup is structured data written in the vocabulary from schema.org. It labels the facts on a page — this is a business, this is its address, these are its opening hours, this is a product with this price — so search engines and AI systems don’t have to guess. JSON-LD is a block of code that sits separately from your visible content, which makes it easy to add and maintain.
Which schema should your pages use?
| Page | Schema | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Home / contact page of a local business | LocalBusiness (or a subtype like Dentist, Restaurant) | Address, hours, phone and map location for local search |
| Company website without walk-in customers | Organization | Logo, contact and social profiles for brand knowledge |
| Product pages | Product with Offer | Price and availability in search results and shopping |
| Pages with genuine FAQs | FAQPage | Helps search engines and AI assistants match questions to answers |
A note on FAQ rich results
Google limited FAQ rich results in search to a small set of authoritative government and health websites. FAQ schema remains valid structured data and still helps search engines and AI assistants understand your question-and-answer content — just don’t expect the expandable FAQ boxes in Google results for most business sites.
Common schema mistakes
- Marking up information that isn’t visible on the page.
- Adding fake ratings or reviews — this violates Google’s guidelines.
- A different name, address or phone number than your Google Business Profile.
- Copying another business’s schema and forgetting to change details.
- Using Product schema on category pages instead of individual products.
Frequently asked questions
Does schema markup improve rankings?
Not directly, but it helps search engines understand your pages, can unlock rich results, and supports how AI assistants describe your business.
Is JSON-LD better than microdata?
Google recommends JSON-LD because it is separate from your HTML and easier to maintain.
Where do I paste the schema code?
Inside the head section or just before the closing body tag of the page it describes.
Can I add more than one schema type to a page?
Yes. A page can have several JSON-LD blocks, for example LocalBusiness and FAQPage, as long as each matches visible content.
How do I test my schema?
Use Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator, both linked in the tool.
