Next.js vs React: What’s the Difference and Which Should You Use?
React is a JavaScript library for building user interfaces. Next.js is a framework built on React that adds routing, server rendering, static generation, image optimisation and back-end API routes. Use Next.js for websites and stores that need SEO; plain React (with Vite) suits dashboards and apps behind a login. Kode Studio in Hyderabad builds with both.
| React | UI library (by Meta) — you choose routing, data and build tools |
|---|---|
| Next.js | Full framework on top of React (by Vercel) — routing, rendering, APIs built in |
| SEO | Next.js is stronger out of the box (server-rendered or static HTML) |
| Best for React + Vite | Dashboards, admin panels, internal tools, apps behind login |
| Best for Next.js | Marketing sites, blogs, stores, content-heavy apps |
| AI builders | Lovable and Bolt usually generate React + Vite; v0 generates Next.js |
What is React?
React is an open-source JavaScript library from Meta for building interactive user interfaces from reusable components. On its own it handles the view layer — what the user sees and how it updates. A typical React app today is created with Vite, uses a router library for pages, and talks to a separate back end or service like Supabase for data.
By default, a React + Vite app renders in the browser: the server sends a mostly empty HTML page and JavaScript builds the content. That’s great for app-like experiences, but search engines and link previews see less content unless you add pre-rendering.
What is Next.js?
Next.js is a React framework that adds the pieces most production websites need: file-based routing, server-side rendering and static generation (so pages arrive as full HTML), image and font optimisation, metadata for SEO, and back-end API routes in the same project. It is built and maintained by Vercel and can be hosted on Vercel, other platforms or your own Node.js server.
Next.js vs React: comparison
| React (with Vite) | Next.js | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | UI library | Full-stack framework on React |
| Rendering | Client-side by default | Server, static, or client — per page |
| SEO out of the box | Weaker without pre-rendering | Strong |
| Routing | Add a router library | Built in (file-based) |
| Back-end code | Separate server or service | API routes / server actions in the project |
| Hosting | Any static host (Netlify, Cloudflare, cPanel) | Vercel, Node server, or static export for simple sites |
| Learning curve | Lower | Higher — more concepts |
| Build speed for dashboards | Very fast | Good, but more structure |
Why it matters for SEO and AI search
Google can render JavaScript, but it is slower and less reliable than reading HTML directly, and many other crawlers — including some AI assistants and social link previews — read only the initial HTML. A React app that renders everything in the browser may appear blank to them. Next.js sends complete HTML for each page, with titles, descriptions and structured data, which is why we recommend it (or pre-rendering) for any page that needs to be found.
This is the most common problem we fix in AI-built websites: a beautiful Lovable or Bolt React app that Google barely indexes. See our AI website deploy guide.
Choose React (with Vite) when…
- You are building a dashboard, admin panel, CRM or internal tool behind a login.
- SEO is irrelevant for the app’s pages.
- You want the simplest hosting — any static host or cPanel.
- Your team or AI tool already produced a Vite app that works well.
Choose Next.js when…
- You are building a marketing website, blog, online store or marketplace that must rank.
- You want front end and back end in one codebase.
- Pages need fresh data on each request (prices, stock) or fast static pages that rebuild periodically.
- You are using v0 or deploying on Vercel.
What this means for your budget
For business owners, the framework choice affects hosting and developer cost more than build price. React + Vite apps host cheaply on static hosts. Next.js apps with server rendering need Vercel (paid for business use), another Node-capable platform or a VPS. For many small business websites, a lightweight custom site or a statically exported Next.js site is the most cost-effective. Our team in Gachibowli, Hyderabad chooses the stack per project — not by fashion.
Performance on Indian mobile networks
Most Indian visitors browse on mid-range Android phones over mobile data. Client-rendered React apps ship a large JavaScript bundle before showing content, which can feel slow on these devices. Next.js can send ready HTML first and load interactivity after, improving the time to first meaningful content. Whichever you choose, keep bundles small, lazy-load heavy components, compress images, and test on a real budget phone — not just a fast laptop.
Verdict: Next.js or React?
Public pages that need SEO → Next.js (or pre-rendering).
App behind a login → React with Vite is simpler and cheaper to host.
Many products use both: a Next.js marketing site and a React dashboard. It’s not either/or — Next.js is React, with more built in.
Frequently asked questions
Is Next.js better than React?
Next.js isn’t a competitor — it’s a framework built on React. It is better for SEO-focused websites; plain React with Vite is simpler for apps behind a login.
Is Next.js good for SEO?
Yes. It renders complete HTML on the server or at build time, with built-in metadata support, which helps search engines and AI crawlers.
Can I convert a React app to Next.js?
Yes. Components move over directly; routing, data fetching and some browser-only code need adjusting.
Do I need Vercel to host Next.js?
No. Next.js runs on any Node.js server or VPS, other platforms, or as a static export for simple sites.
What do Lovable and Bolt use?
They usually generate React apps built with Vite; v0 by Vercel generates Next.js apps.
Which is easier to learn?
React with Vite has fewer concepts to start; Next.js adds routing, rendering modes and server code.
What people ask AI about this
Questions people type into ChatGPT, Gemini and Google — answered directly.
“Next.js aur React mein kya fark hai?”
React UI banane ki library hai; Next.js React par bana framework hai jo routing, server rendering aur SEO deta hai. Website/store ke liye Next.js, login ke peeche wale app ke liye React + Vite. Kode Studio, Hyderabad dono mein kaam karta hai.
“My Lovable React site is not on Google. Should I move to Next.js?”
Often pre-rendering or moving key public pages to Next.js fixes it. Kode Studio in Hyderabad audits AI-built React sites and fixes indexing.
