Netlify Drop: Publish a Website in Minutes by Drag and Drop
Netlify Drop lets you publish a website by dragging a folder onto app.netlify.com/drop. You get a live netlify.app link in seconds. Log in first so the site stays in your account, then add a custom domain with free SSL. For React or Vite apps, drop the built dist folder. Kode Studio in Hyderabad can set it up for you.

What is Netlify Drop?
Netlify Drop is the simplest way to put a website online. Instead of setting up hosting, FTP or Git, you drag a folder of website files into your browser and Netlify publishes it on its global network with a link like your-site-name.netlify.app.
It is ideal for:
- Websites generated by ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini as HTML, CSS and JavaScript files
- Projects exported from Lovable, Bolt or v0 after you build them
- Portfolios, landing pages, event pages and prototypes you want to share quickly
- Students and designers who don’t want to learn deployment yet
How to deploy a website with Netlify Drop
These steps work for any static website — a folder that contains an index.html file.
You'll need: Your website folder · A browser · A free Netlify account (recommended)
Prepare your folder
Make sure the folder has
index.htmlat the top level — not inside another folder. If you downloaded a ZIP, unzip it first; Drop expects a folder. Keep CSS, JS and images in the same folder with the paths your HTML uses.Log in to Netlify (recommended)
Sign up free with GitHub, Google or email. Sites dropped while logged out are anonymous and temporary — Netlify asks you to claim them, and unclaimed sites can be taken offline. Logging in first keeps the site in your account.
Open the drop zone
Go to
app.netlify.com/drop, or open your team’s Projects page and scroll to the drag-and-drop area.Drag your folder in
Drop the whole folder. Netlify uploads it and gives you a live URL within seconds. Open it on your phone to check everything loads.
Rename the site
In Project configuration → Change project name, give it a readable name so the link becomes
yourbrand.netlify.app.Add your own domain
Go to Domain management → Add a domain, enter
yourbrand.in, and follow the DNS instructions — either point your domain’s records to Netlify or switch nameservers to Netlify DNS. HTTPS is issued automatically once DNS is verified.Update the site later
Make your changes locally, then drag the updated folder onto the deploy drop zone at the bottom of the project’s Deploys page. Netlify keeps previous deploys, so you can roll back with one click.
Deploying a React, Vite, Lovable or Bolt project
Modern JavaScript apps must be built before they can be served. If you drop the source folder (with package.json and src) while logged out, Netlify publishes the files as they are and you will see a blank page.
- Run
npm installand thennpm run buildon your computer. - Drop the output folder — usually
distfor Vite, Lovable and Bolt, orbuildfor Create React App. - For apps with client-side routing, add a file named
_redirectsinside the output folder containing/* /index.html 200, so refreshing a page doesn’t show “Page not found”.
When you are logged in, Netlify can detect common frameworks and run the build for you. For ongoing work, connecting a GitHub repository is better than dragging folders — every push deploys automatically. Our Netlify custom domain guide covers Git deploys and DNS in detail.
Common Netlify Drop problems and fixes
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “Page not found” on the live link | index.html is inside a sub-folder | Drop the folder that directly contains index.html |
| Blank white page | Unbuilt React/Vite source was dropped | Run npm run build and drop dist |
| Images or CSS missing | Wrong file paths or file-name capitalisation | Use relative paths and match upper/lower case exactly |
| 404 when refreshing inner pages | Single-page app routing | Add _redirects with /* /index.html 200 |
| Site disappeared | Dropped anonymously and never claimed | Log in and drop it again |
| Domain shows “Awaiting External DNS” | DNS records not added or still propagating | Recheck records at your registrar; allow up to 24–48 hours |
| Email stopped after moving nameservers | MX records not copied to Netlify DNS | Add your email provider’s MX and TXT records in Netlify DNS |
Is Netlify Drop enough for a business website?
For a static website — a portfolio, landing page or small business site with no database — Netlify Drop on a free account can be all the hosting you need. Netlify’s free plan has monthly usage limits; check the current plan details if you expect heavy traffic.
It is not enough on its own when you need a contact form that stores leads in a database, user logins, an online store, server-side code (PHP, Node APIs) or business email. Those need a backend, a different host or extra services. If your site is outgrowing a drag-and-drop deploy, we can move it to proper hosting with your domain, email and backups.
Frequently asked questions
Is Netlify Drop free?
Yes, you can use Netlify Drop on Netlify’s free plan. The free plan has monthly usage limits; paid plans add more capacity and features.
Do I need an account to use Netlify Drop?
No, you can drop a site without an account, but anonymous sites are temporary and must be claimed. Log in first if you want to keep the site.
Can I use my own domain with Netlify Drop?
Yes. After the site is in your account, add your domain under Domain management and update DNS at your registrar. Netlify issues a free SSL certificate automatically.
Can I upload a ZIP file to Netlify Drop?
Unzip it first and drop the folder. The folder you drop should contain index.html at its top level.
How do I update a site I published with Netlify Drop?
Drag the updated folder onto the drop zone on the project’s Deploys page. Netlify publishes the new version and keeps older deploys for rollback.
Why does my React app show a blank page on Netlify?
You probably dropped the source code. Build it with npm run build and drop the dist (or build) folder instead.
