GoDaddy Domain Guide: DNS, Email, Nameservers and Transfer
In GoDaddy, open My Products, choose your domain and click DNS. There you can add A, CNAME, MX and TXT records, or change nameservers to point the whole domain to another host. To move registrars, unlock the domain, get the authorisation code and start the transfer at the new registrar. Kode Studio, Hyderabad, manages GoDaddy domains for clients.
| DNS settings | My Products → domain → DNS → Records |
|---|---|
| Nameservers | DNS → Nameservers → Change |
| MX + TXT (SPF/DKIM) records from your email provider | |
| Transfer out | Unlock domain, get auth code, start at new registrar |
| 60-day rule | New or recently transferred domains usually cannot move for 60 days |
| Renewals | Check renewal price and auto-renew before the first year ends |
Buying a domain on GoDaddy: what to watch
GoDaddy is one of the world’s largest registrars and is widely used in India. The first-year price is often discounted; renewal prices are higher, so check the renewal amount in the cart. Untick add-ons you do not need — many small businesses do not need extra paid privacy, website builder or email bundles if their developer sets things up elsewhere. Make sure the domain is registered in your name and email, not a freelancer’s. For typical prices, see domain cost in India.
Editing DNS records
Where everything about your domain is controlled.
You'll need: GoDaddy account login · Records from your host or email provider
Open DNS management
Sign in, go to My Products, find your domain and click DNS.
Point the website
Edit the A record for
@to your server’s IP, and setwwwas a CNAME to your root domain or as your host instructs.Add email records
Add the MX records and the TXT records for SPF and DKIM given by Google Workspace, Zoho or Hostinger email.
Add verification records
Google Search Console and other services ask for a TXT record — paste it exactly.
Wait and check
Changes usually apply within minutes to a few hours; occasionally up to 48 hours.
DNS records in plain English
| Record | What it does | Example use |
|---|---|---|
| A | Points a name to an IPv4 address | yourdomain.in → your hosting server |
| CNAME | Points a name to another name | www → yourdomain.in, or shop → a Shopify address |
| MX | Says where email is delivered | Google Workspace or Zoho Mail servers |
| TXT | Holds text for verification and email security | SPF, DKIM, DMARC, Search Console |
| NS | Says which DNS provider controls the domain | Hostinger or Cloudflare nameservers |
Changing nameservers (point everything to another host)
If your hosting company asks you to “change nameservers”, go to DNS → Nameservers → Change, choose to enter your own nameservers, and paste the two (or more) values they gave you. After this, DNS records are managed at the new provider, not in GoDaddy — any email records must be recreated there, or email will stop. Hostinger example: Hostinger nameservers guide.
Connecting business email
Email works independently of your website. Choose a provider — Google Workspace, Zoho Mail or Hostinger email — then add its MX and TXT records in GoDaddy DNS. Add SPF, DKIM and DMARC so your emails reach inboxes instead of spam. Compare costs in business email cost, and see Hostinger email setup for one example.
Avoiding renewal and expiry problems
- Keep auto-renew on and a valid card saved.
- Use an email address you actually read for the account — expiry warnings go there.
- Consider renewing for several years if the renewal price is acceptable.
- If a domain expires, there is a grace and redemption period, but recovery can become expensive, and the domain can be lost.
Transferring a domain out of GoDaddy
Moving registrar without downtime.
You'll need: GoDaddy login · Account at the new registrar
Check eligibility
Domains registered or transferred in the last 60 days generally cannot be moved yet.
Note your DNS records
Screenshot or export all records so you can recreate them if needed.
Unlock the domain
In domain settings, turn off the transfer lock.
Get the authorisation code
Request the auth (EPP) code; it is shown or emailed to the account owner.
Start the transfer at the new registrar
Enter the domain and auth code and pay; the transfer usually adds a year to the registration.
Approve and verify
Approve any confirmation emails, then check the website and email still work.
Common GoDaddy domain problems
- Website not loading after DNS change: wrong A record, or old nameservers still active.
- Email stopped after moving hosting: MX records were not recreated at the new nameservers.
- Cannot log in: domain was bought by a former developer — use GoDaddy’s account recovery with proof of ownership.
- Parked page showing: the domain still points to GoDaddy’s parking servers.
