How to Accept UPI Payments on Your Website

Quick answer

The reliable way to accept UPI on a website is through a payment gateway such as Razorpay, PhonePe, Cashfree or PayU: customers pay with any UPI app and your website confirms the order automatically. A static UPI QR is free but needs manual checking. Gateway fees are about 2% plus GST. Kode Studio in Hyderabad sets it up.

Three ways to accept UPI on a website

Payment links from a gatewaySame as gatewayAutomatic for that linkInvoices, WhatsApp orders, custom quotes

A static QR looks attractive because it is free, but every order needs someone to match a payment in the bank app to an order on the website. Customers also sometimes pay the wrong amount or forget to share the screenshot. Above a handful of orders a day, a gateway pays for itself in saved time and fewer disputes.

How UPI checkout works on websites

  • UPI intent (mobile): the customer taps “Pay with UPI” and their UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM) opens with the amount filled. They approve with their PIN and return to your site. This is the fastest flow on phones.
  • QR code (desktop): a dynamic QR with the exact amount appears on screen; the customer scans it with their phone.
  • Collect request: the customer enters their UPI ID and approves a request in their app. Usage of collect flows has been restricted in recent years, so intent and QR are the main options.

The gateway shows the right option automatically based on the customer’s device.

Setting up UPI payments on your website

These steps apply whether your site is custom-built, WordPress/WooCommerce or Shopify.

  • Time: 2–7 days (mostly KYC)

You'll need: Business PAN and bank account · Website with policies and contact details · Payment gateway account

  1. Prepare your website

Gateways review your site before approval. Add contact details, product or service pricing, and privacy, refund, shipping and terms pages.

  2. Apply to a payment gateway

Sign up and submit KYC: PAN, business proof, bank account, and GST if registered. Approval usually takes from one to a few working days.

  3. Integrate the gateway

Install the official plugin (WooCommerce), app (Shopify) or integrate the API (custom sites). Enable UPI along with cards and net banking.

  4. Set up webhooks

Webhooks tell your server when a payment succeeds or fails, so orders are confirmed even if the customer closes the browser before returning to your site.

  5. Test, then go live

Use test keys to simulate success, failure and refunds. Switch to live keys and make a small real UPI payment to confirm money settles to your bank.

UPI fees for merchants

UPI transactions carry zero MDR under current rules, but payment gateways commonly charge a platform fee for UPI collected through their checkout — for example 2% on Razorpay’s standard plan as of October 2026 — plus 18% GST on that fee. High-volume merchants can negotiate. Compare total costs in our payment gateway charges guide.

Handling failed and pending UPI payments

Sometimes money is debited from the customer but the order doesn’t confirm immediately — usually because of a delay between the bank and the UPI app. Good integrations handle this:

  • Show a “payment pending” page instead of “failed” while the status is checked.
  • Rely on webhooks and status checks, not just the browser redirect.
  • Automatically confirm the order when a late success arrives, or refund automatically if it finally fails.
  • Send the customer a WhatsApp or email update either way.

Tips to increase UPI payments

  • Show UPI first on mobile checkout — most Indian shoppers prefer it.
  • Offer a small prepaid discount over cash on delivery.
  • Keep checkout to one page with auto-filled phone number and address.
  • Use payment links on WhatsApp for orders taken by phone.
  • Display trusted payment logos and your contact details near the pay button.
